**"Ceasefire Hope Amid Silence: Democrats' Response to Trump-Brokered Peace in Gaza War"**
In a historic moment of hope and cautious optimism, President Donald Trump's announcement that Israel had agreed with Hamas on the first phase of an initial ceasefire was met by mixed reactions from key Democratic figures. Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) and Rashida Tlaib (D-MI), known for their vocal criticism against both Trump’s policies towards Gaza as well as Israel's actions, have notably remained silent in celebration of the ceasefire deal.
Ocasio-Cortez has been a staunch critic since early January 2024. In March 2024 alone she accused Israel of committing genocide and criticized Trump's government for continuing to supply weapons that would result in starvation conditions within Gaza – calling them "massacred civilians indiscriminately." Her endorsement went as far, nearly ten days into the conflict which began on October 7th; Tlaib called out then President Joe Biden's refusal supposedly hindering any ceasefire and contributing towards devastation.
In February this year she accused Trump of suggesting ethnic cleansing in response to his notion that Americans should take over Gaza following Hamas' offensive. The National News Desk reached Washington for comment but no official statement was forthcoming from the White House at press time, though Tlaib herself tweeted: “Palestinians aren’t going anywhere,” calling Trump's silence a consequence of Congress's bipartisan support.
Meanwhile Ocasio-Cortez posted on X (now Twitter) saying that she called out Biden immediately after October 7th for not facilitating ceasefire. She did hope this was an early and hopeful step but insisted the ongoing bombing, starvation in Gaza must be confronted with accountability demanded against every war crime committed during said genocide.
Other Democrats like Delia Ramirez from Illinois have also expressed cautious optimism noting how much time it took to reach a seemingly peaceful agreement: “Unfortunately I’ve seen too many lives lost for me wait until this long before calling out the President. However, after today’s ceasefire announcement there is hope that we may see hostages and prisoners returned home.”
Similarly on X Omar voiced her approval stating "hopeful step", adding however to continue demanding accountability of all war crimes committed during said genocide whilst also maintaining a demand for an end to occupation.
While Tlaib has not publicly acknowledged Trump's role in brokering peace, it was noted that she believes the ceasefire announcement came following intense pressure from Congress. “We will remember where you stood," tweeted Ocasio-Cortez on X referring back at Biden and Trump as well.
In conclusion despite mixed sentiments expressed by leading Democrats Tlaib's silence (alongside many other critics of Israel) against celebrating this historic moment shows that there remains much to be done in terms of holding accountable both the Palestinians who initiated hostilities, but also Israelis for what has been deemed "genocide" and destruction inflicted upon civilians. As Ocasio-Cortez tweeted after hearing Trump's announcement: “I will continue to hold them responsible (Israel) & call out Biden.”
